– Around 30 houses in several areas of Wellawaya have been inundated following the overflow of the Kiridi Oya, according to the Monaragala District Disaster Management Centre said.The incident was reported at 7.15 p.m. today (08), affecting the Wellawaya Town, Warunagama and Nugeyaya Grama Niladhari divisions in the Wellawaya Divisional Secretariat area.

Officials said the flooding occurred after water levels in the Kiridi Oya rose due to prevailing adverse weather conditions.Authorities have also opened three spill gates of the Alikotaara Reservoir by two feet each to manage rising water levels.The Monaragala District Deputy Director has advised residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant as water levels may continue to rise.
