America ready to support probe into Cyber thefts

Colombo, May 9 (Daily Mirror) – In the wake of the US $ 2.5 million cyber theft at the Finance Ministry and reports of America’s Federal Bureau (FBI) being approached for help in investigations, the United States said it values its law enforcement partnership with Sri Lanka and is prepared to consider official requests for assistance submitted through appropriate diplomatic and law enforcement channels.
In response to a query in this regard by Daily Mirror, the United States said it values its law enforcement partnership with Sri Lanka and is prepared to consider official requests for assistance submitted through appropriate diplomatic and law enforcement channels.
An Embassy spokesperson said that the United States takes seriously the integrity of foreign transactions involving U.S. government entities.
“We value our law enforcement partnership with Sri Lanka and are prepared to consider official requests for assistance submitted through appropriate diplomatic and law enforcement channels. As a matter of policy, we do not comment on ongoing investigations or the specifics of law enforcement cooperation,” the spokesperson said.
Sri Lanka lost US $ 2.5 million after cyber criminals breached the computer system. It was meant for debt payment to Australia.
Besides, Sri Lanka also lost US $ 625,000 as part of payment to US Post. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has already launched an investigation into the disappearance of nearly US$625,000 transferred by the Department of Posts to the United States Postal Service (USPS).
Earlier, FBI sleuths assisted in Sri Lanka’s investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks and submitted a report.
