Two doctors at Trincomalee Hospital suspended following infant death
Colombo, May 12 (Daily Mirror) – The Director General of Health Services has suspended the services of two doctors over the death of an infant at the Trincomalee District General Hospital.
The disciplinary action follows a preliminary investigation into the tragic death of the newborn at the hospital on April 9.
The investigation was launched after allegations surfaced regarding medical negligence during the delivery. According to the inquiry, a doctor at the hospital had reportedly made six urgent telephone calls to the two senior doctors, requesting their immediate presence in the labour room due to complications during the birth.
However, both doctors had allegedly failed to respond to the calls or attend to the emergency.
The probe further revealed that at the time of the incident, the two doctors were allegedly performing a Cesarean section at a private hospital. This has led to serious charges of abandoning their official duties during working hours to engage in private practice, in violation of established medical regulations.
Based on these findings, the Ministry of Health suspended the duo from service.
