Dengue cases rise; 14 deaths reported this year
– A rise in dengue patients has been reported across the country compared to last year, the National Dengue Control Unit said.
Speaking at a media briefing held at the Health Ministry today (12), Dr. Prasila Samaraweera said that 27,754 dengue cases had been reported islandwide this year as of yesterday (11), while 14 deaths had also been recorded.She said the highest number of patients had been reported from the Western Province, with additional cases reported from the Colombo, Gampaha, Matara, Galle, Ratnapura, Kalutara and Kandy districts.
Dr. Samaraweera said that dengue patients are now being reported from all 25 districts and warned that the number of infections could further increase with the onset of the monsoon season.She urged the public to destroy mosquito breeding sites and maintain clean surroundings to prevent the spread of dengue.The doctor also advised the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, headaches, vomiting, nausea or red spots on the body, particularly if at least two symptoms are present.She further revealed that mosquito breeding has increased in schools, workplaces, religious places and both government and private institutions more than in homes. As a result, Medical Officer of Health offices have been empowered to take legal action against premises that continue to maintain mosquito breeding sites carelessly.
Dr. Samaraweera said that improper garbage disposal remains one of the main causes of mosquito breeding and called on all parties to take responsibility in eliminating breeding grounds.
