– The Fisheries, Aquatic and Marine Resources Ministry has initiated a program to strengthen the management of Sri Lanka’s shark fishing industry in line with international standards.A special discussion on the sustainable management of shark fishing was recently held at the Ministry under the patronage of its Secretary, Dr. B.K. Kolitha Kamal Jinadasa, with the participation of Director General of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Susantha Kahawattamahathaya.

Officials noted that sharks are primarily caught as by-catch by Sri Lankan multi-day fishing vessels. They also pointed out that the export of legally permitted shark products, including fins, gills, jaws and skin, as well as certain live ornamental shark species, contributes to the country’s foreign exchange earnings.However, as several shark species are considered endangered or threatened globally, officials stressed the importance of ensuring that the industry is managed in accordance with international conservation and fisheries standards.

The Government has already taken strict measures to protect shark species that are prohibited from being caught in Sri Lankan waters and to ensure that only legally permitted shark species and products are exported. The latest program is aimed at further strengthening monitoring, management and regulatory measures to ensure the sustainable use and protection of shark resources.
