FOR DISPLAING UNCERTIFIED ELECTRICAL CORDS WITH SLS ANURADHAPURA SUPER MARKET FINED RS 200,000

Anuradhapura supermarket fined Rs. 200,000 over uncertified electrical cords

The Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court has imposed a fine of Rs. 200,000 on a supermarket in Anuradhapura for displaying electrical cord reels for sale without the required Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) certification. The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said its officers, during a raid conducted on August 18 at the Arpico Daily supermarket on 11th Street, Anuradhapura, found ‘Samara’ type electrical cords displayed for sale without the required SLS certification.Following legal action by the CAA, the case was taken up before the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court on August 21, when the court imposed the Rs. 200,000 fine.

The CAA said that compliance with prescribed standards for electrical products, including electrical cords, is essential for consumer safety. Substandard electrical products can increase the risk of electric shocks, electrical leakage and fires. The Authority urged consumers to check for the SLS mark and other required information when purchasing electrical cords from supermarkets and other retailers.Consumers can report suspected violations or the sale of questionable products to the CAA by calling the 1977 consumer hotline during office hours.
