CEA urges public to avoid polythene, plastic for Vesak decorations

C- The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has urged the public to refrain from using polythene and plastic materials for Vesak decorations and dansals, warning that the use of several single-use plastic items remains prohibited under the law.
Authority Chairman Tilak Hewawasam said materials made of polythene and plastic continue to be widely used for Vesak lanterns, decorative items, entertainment equipment and charitable activities such as dansals during the Vesak season. He said that polythene lunch sheets, single-use plastic cups, plates, spoons, forks and polythene wax leaves are commonly used in the organization of dansals despite existing regulations banning such items. The Chairman pointed out that Gazette No. 2341/30 issued on July 19, 2023 expanded restrictions already imposed under Gazette No. 2034/34 of September 1, 2017, prohibiting the sale, free distribution, display and use of several single-use plastic and polystyrene products, including lunch sheets, food containers, drinking straws, cups, plates and plastic garlands.
It further highlighted that the use of polyethylene and polypropylene products for decorations at political, religious, cultural and social events is also prohibited by law, and violations are punishable.
The CEA warned that improper disposal of polythene and plastic waste pollutes waterways, harms animals and contributes to microplastic contamination that can affect both human and animal health. Open burning of such waste also releases toxic gases into the environment, it said.
The CEA called on the public to use environmentally friendly alternatives during Vesak celebrations and to dispose of non-biodegradable waste responsibly in keeping with the Buddhist values of compassion and protection of all living beings.
