MEN’S JAVELING THROW IN ZURICH TRIUMPHED BY RUMESH THARANGA

Tharanga wins Men’s Javelin Throw in Zurich

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga once again came to the fore when he won the men’s javelin throw at the Zurich Diamond League with a 92.07-metre effort on his final attempt early yesterday morning. Tharanga’s victory in Zurich adds to what has already been an outstanding season. The Zurich victory also secured Tharanga’s place in the Diamond League Final in Brussels, which will be held on September 4 and 5. He heads into the final after a season that has included multiple Diamond League victories and a personal best of 92.62 metres.

The 23-year-old Sri Lankan champion, who is currently the world No. 1 javelin thrower, saved his best for his final attempt to secure another major victory during his breakthrough 2026 season. His 92.62-metre throw in Rome remains his personal best and the leading mark he has produced in 2026. His Zurich effort came just 55 centimetres short of that distance. Grenada’s Anderson Peters finished second with 86.93 metres, while Poland’s Dawid Wegner took third place with 85.16 metres.

Throwing beyond 92 metres twice in the same season is a significant achievement and underlines the consistency Tharanga has developed during his breakthrough at the highest level.Tharanga opened the Zurich competition with an 81.50-metre throw before improving to 88.23 metres in the second round. He then recorded 89.90 metres in his third attempt, followed by 84.91 metres in the fourth. His fifth throw was a foul. However, with the competition reaching its final round, Tharanga produced the throw that mattered most—a 92.07-metre effort—to win the event in grand style. His final attempt gave him a clear winning margin over Grenada’s Peters and confirmed another Diamond League victory, following his previous successes in Doha and Lausanne. He also won Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow, further highlighting his impressive progress this season.

After his Zurich Diamond League victory, Tharanga said: “I am really happy to produce my second-best throw of the season and win this meet. I missed the meet record by just 20 centimetres, but I am thrilled with the result. The crowd gave me tremendous support, which made the victory even more special.”
