Attempt to cultivate Hashish and Marijuana in Sri Lanka
A Sunday newspaper has reported that Customs have uncovered a racket involving the importation of hashish and marijuana seeds into Sri Lanka for cultivation, instead of importing the drugs themselves. Customs have now discovered that drug traffickers are sending the seeds to Sri Lanka using courier services.It is also reported that, in the past, the main routes used to distribute drugs to Sri Lanka were from or via Thailand.
It is said that this route has now changed, with drugs currently being sent from countries such as Madagascar, the United Kingdom and Italy.Customs Media Spokesman and Customs Director Chandana Punchihewa told the media that there is suspicion that marijuana and hashish seeds are being brought into the country for cultivation.
