PUBLIC WARNED BY POLICE OF AI DEEPFAKE SCAMS

Sri Lanka Police warn public of AI Deepfake scams

The Sri Lanka Police have warned the public about the growing threat of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered deepfake scams, cautioning that criminals are increasingly using sophisticated technology to deceive people, steal money and obtain sensitive personal information.According to the police, INTERPOL has highlighted the growing use of AI technology in fraud schemes, in which criminals create convincing fake videos and voice recordings to impersonate real individuals.

Scammers can use photographs or short voice recordings available on social media to generate deepfake content that imitates family members, friends and other trusted individuals. These fabricated identities may be used to manipulate victims into transferring money, disclosing banking details or revealing confidential information. The police have urged the public to remain vigilant when receiving unexpected calls, messages or video calls from people claiming to be relatives, friends or trusted contacts who suddenly request money or sensitive information. Members of the public are advised to verify the identity of anyone making such requests through a separate, trusted communication channel before taking action. They should also avoid sharing banking credentials, passwords, verification codes or other confidential details in response to suspicious communications.

The police further urged the public to exercise caution when viewing or responding to unfamiliar digital content, as AI-generated audio and video may appear increasingly realistic.
