DELAY IN STARTING NOROCHCHOLAI PLANT QUESTIONED

Why does it take days to restart Norochcholai power plant?

The Ministry of Energy has explained that restarting the Norochcholai coal power plant after a shutdown can take several days because its boilers, turbines and other critical equipment must be carefully inspected and gradually brought back to operating conditions. The ministry’s explanation comes amid public concern over the time required to restore electricity generation following shutdowns at the Lakvijaya Power Plant in Norochcholai.

At the plant, coal is burned to heat water and produce high-pressure steam, which drives turbines connected to electricity generators. When the plant shuts down, the process is interrupted, and the equipment must be safely prepared before electricity generation can resume. One of the main challenges is controlling the temperature of the boiler and its metal components. These components operate at extremely high temperatures, and rapid cooling or reheating can cause uneven expansion and contraction, potentially damaging the equipment. The turbines must also be brought to the required temperature, pressure and operating conditions. Attempting to restart them too quickly without following the necessary procedures could damage expensive machinery.

Before restarting the plant, engineers must identify the cause of the shutdown and inspect critical components, including pumps, valves, electrical systems and safety equipment. If any faults are detected, the necessary repairs must be completed before operations can resume.Once the inspections and repairs are completed, the boiler is gradually brought to the required temperature and pressure. Steam is then supplied to the turbine in a controlled manner to increase its speed while ensuring the safety of the machinery.

The generator must subsequently be synchronized with the national electricity grid before electricity generation can be increased gradually. The time required to restore operations depends on the circumstances of the shutdown, the condition of the equipment and the nature of any technical faults. A major malfunction or an extended shutdown could result in a longer recovery period. However, not every shutdown necessarily requires several days to restart the plant. The time taken depends on the specific technical problem and the procedures required to restore the unit safely. The restart process is therefore not simply a matter of switching the plant back on, but involves a series of technical checks and controlled procedures to ensure that electricity generation can resume safely and reliably.
