Future remains ‘highly uncertain’ – CBSL Governor
Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) – Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, has reportedly warned that the future remains “highly uncertain” amid prevailing global conditions.
Dr. Weerasinghe made the remarks while addressing the Parliament Committee on Public Finance (CoPF) on May 15, in response to a question raised by acting chairperson of the committee, Rauff Hakeem, regarding the current global conflict situation, ‘Aruna’ newspaper reports.
He had reportedly pointed out that, under the prevailing circumstances, there is an increasing need to reduce fuel consumption, noting that Indian Prime Minister – Narendra Modi had also emphasized the importance of such measures despite India maintaining foreign reserves of around USD 700 billion.The CBSL Governor further cautioned that if global uncertainty continues, Sri Lanka could face increased risks, adding that it is difficult to make reliable forecasts even for the next 03 months due to the prevailing situation. Meanwhile, Rauff Hakeem had reportedly noted during the committee meeting that India has already shifted some state-sector employees to work-from-home arrangements and suggested that Sri Lanka’s Finance Ministry should also consider similar measures.
