AS BUYERS EMERGE SELECTIVELY CSE AT LOW LEVEL

CSE tests lower levels as buyers emerge selectively

The Colombo Stock Exchange closed lower for a sixth consecutive session on 26 October 2026, although repeated intraday recovery attempts suggested some selective buying interest emerging at lower levels. The ASPI declined 44.35 points, or 0.23%, to close at a new YTD low of 19,640.56, while the S&P SL20 fell 11.76 points, or 0.21%, to 5,601.87. The ASPI briefly recovered above 19,700 during early trading, but the rebound failed to hold as selling pressure returned through the session.

Market turnover remained subdued at LKR 666.29 million, with 29.70 million shares traded. The Banks sector led activity with approximately LKR 185.67 million in turnover, followed by Capital Goods at LKR 168.48 million. Commercial Bank recorded the highest individual counter turnover at LKR 107.92 million.Crossings accounted for around 20% of total equity turnover, led by Access Engineering with a LKR 74.50 million block, while Commercial Bank recorded two crossings totaling to approximately LKR 59.09 million.Market breadth remained negative, with 80 gainers against 123 decliners, resulting in an advance-decline ratio of 0.65. Foreign investors returned to marginal net selling, recording an outflow of approximately LKR 6.59 million.

Carson Cumberbatch was the largest negative contributor to the ASPI, followed by Commercial Bank, LAMB.N, Distilleries and Hayleys. SMB Finance provided the strongest positive contribution, followed by SINS.N, Ceylon Cold Stores, LOLC Finance and ACL Cables.

While the ASPI recorded another YTD low, the relatively smaller decline and repeated recovery attempts indicate that buyers are selectively emerging around current levels. However, sub-LKR 1 billion turnover and negative market breadth suggest conviction remains limited, with stronger participation needed to establish a more sustainable recovery.
