India assures to provide dairy cows of high quality to SL!

The Government of India has assured to provide dairy cows of high quality to Sri Lanka due to the lack of such dairy cows in the country.

Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay has made the assurance during a discussion held with Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera.

The ministry also said that Mr. Baglay and President Ranil Wickremesinghe recently had a discussion where the High Commissioner has agreed to provide full support for the revival of the livestock development sector in Sri Lanka.

According to the ministry, Sri Lanka’s milk and dairy-related production dropped by 19% last year due to the downturn faced by the industry amid the economic crisis.

Meanwhile, the ministry further said that the country’s corn harvest in the 2021 Maha Season fell to 90,000 metric tons, resulting in a shortage of animal feed in the country, which was further aggravated by the lack of dollars hindering the corn importation.

However, the ministry indicated that 180,000 metric tons of corn were imported by the end of 2022 and 60,000 hectares of corn can be cultivated during the upcoming Season.
