Hatton trader fined Rs. 100,000 for violating rice MRP regulations


A Hatton-based trader has been fined Rs. 100,000 by the Hatton Magistrate’s Court for selling Keeri Samba rice above the government-approved maximum retail price (MRP).

Authorities stated that the regulated price for a kilogram of local Keeri Samba rice is Rs. 260. However, the trader had sold the commodity at Rs. 380 per kilogram, overcharging a customer by Rs. 120.

The violation was uncovered during a raid conducted by officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) in the Nuwara Eliya District, following which legal action was filed.The case was concluded today (May 20) at the Hatton Magistrate’s Court after the shop owner admitted guilt, resulting in a court-imposed fine of Rs. 100,000.Meanwhile, the Consumer Affairs Authority has urged the public to stay alert when purchasing essential goods, reminding consumers to verify MRP labels, avoid paying above regulated prices, and request receipts for all purchases.

The CAA also encouraged the public to report suspected price violations via its hotline 1977 during office hours.
