SOUTH -WEST MONSOON STRENGTHENS WITH HEAVY RAINS AND GUSTY WINDS

Heavy rains, gusty winds as South-West monsoon strengthens


– The Department of Meteorology says the South-West monsoon is gradually establishing over the island, bringing more showers and strong winds to several parts of the country.According to the department, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western Provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.“Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts,” it said.

A few showers are also expected in the Anuradhapura district, while showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m. Meanwhile, the department stated that fairly strong winds of 35-45 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Southern Provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee district.
