PRESIDENT AKD COULD FACE FIVE YEAR JAIL TERM AFTER HIS TERM IN 2029 -GAMMANPILA

Gammanpila claims President AKD could face five-year prison term

Former MP Udaya Gammanpila on Monday accused President Anura Kumara Dissanayake of criminal negligence over a recent disaster that he said claimed more than 600 lives, vowing to pursue legal action once the president leaves office.
Speaking at a press briefing, Gammanpila said criminal charges would be filed against Dissanayake after the completion of his presidential term in 2029, alleging that the scale of the tragedy was the result of negligence at the highest level of government.“When you step down from the presidency in 2029, we will file criminal negligence cases against you without fail,” Gammanpila said. He claimed that evidence had already been gathered to support the allegations.

Gammanpila said the maximum penalty under the law for such an offence is five years’ imprisonment and insisted that the full sentence would be sought, citing what he described as the severity of the damage caused. (Newswire)
