Historic Mihintale Vihare structures at risk due to heavy rains
– The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) has warned that two structures at the historic Mihintale Viharaya are at risk of collapse and subsidence following recent heavy rains.According to GSMB Director General Mrs. Deepani Weerakoon, the ancient Giribanna Stupa and the newly constructed Dharmashala are particularly vulnerable. An excavation engineer from the Anuradhapura office of the GSMB, who inspected the site, noted that the Dharmashala, built without a foundation, requires urgent structural support. The engineer has recommended the construction of a side wall to prevent further damage.
Mrs. Weerakoon also warned that the ancient stupa could suffer cracking or structural weakening if the situation is not addressed promptly. The Bureau highlighted that a thorough study of the area will take time, and a geologist will conduct a detailed investigation to assess the risks and necessary preservation measures.
