Police warn traffic officers over failure to facilitate GovPay fine payments
– Sri Lanka Police has warned that disciplinary action will be taken against traffic police officers who fail to facilitate on-the-spot traffic fine payments through the GovPay system.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police W.P.J. Senadheera said the GovPay payment system was introduced in April 2025 to ease the burden on motorists and reduce time and economic losses caused by delays in settling traffic fines.
He noted that under the previous system, motorists were often forced to spend considerable time making payments, causing unnecessary inconvenience. “The GovPay system was introduced to avoid these difficulties and save valuable time for the public,” the DIG said. Senadheera said awareness programs and the rollout of the system in all nine provinces had been completed by January this year.He further stated that nearly 4,000 mobile phones had been distributed to police stations through LankaPay to support the implementation of the digital payment service.
According to police, around 12% of eligible traffic fines are currently being paid through the GovPay platform.
