Cabinet nod for ‘Surakimu Lanka’ National Energy Security Mission

– The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the implementation of the “Surakimu Lanka” National Energy Security Mission aimed at strengthening Sri Lanka’s energy security and promoting efficient electricity consumption.
The Government said Sri Lanka’s energy security has been affected by several factors, including heavy dependence on fossil fuels, drought conditions, disruptions in fuel supply due to geopolitical instability, and fluctuations in global fuel prices. Authorities noted that the increasing fuel import costs have placed additional pressure on the national economy, which has been further aggravated by irregular electricity consumption patterns among consumers. To address the situation, the Government plans to encourage the public to shift electricity usage to periods with higher renewable energy generation and promote energy efficiency through behavioral changes.Accordingly, the Cabinet approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Energy to implement the integrated national programme in collaboration with government institutions, public corporations, statutory bodies, the private sector, and the general public.
The initiative will be led by the Presidential Secretariat, the Ministry of Energy, the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, and the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat.
