Police seek information on underworld figures hiding abroad

Published

Sri Lanka Police have appealed to Sri Lankans living overseas to provide information on individuals who have fled the country after committing crimes such as murder and drug trafficking and are currently hiding in foreign countries.

The police have requested information on wanted criminals against whom arrest warrants have been issued by Sri Lankan courts and Red Notices have been issued through the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), in order to facilitate their swift arrest and the prompt initiation of legal proceedings against them.

“If overseas Sri Lankan citizens have any information regarding the whereabouts of a criminal hiding abroad or any details about such individuals, we urge them to inform Sri Lanka Police without delay. Sri Lanka Police will give serious attention to such information and take the necessary legal action promptly,” Police Media Spokesman, Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler said.

He further stated:

“Police are paying close attention to suspects, both male and female, who have committed crimes in this country, fled overseas, evaded the courts and continue to direct criminal activities while in hiding. During the three-year period covering 2024, 2025 and 2026, 32 suspects have been brought back to Sri Lanka through international Red Notices. In addition, 70 other suspects connected to various crimes have been repatriated through cooperation with different countries.

“International Red Notices have also been obtained for the arrest of a further 89 suspects. Steps are being taken to bring these 89 individuals back to Sri Lanka as quickly as possible,” the Police Media Spokesman added.

Olympic Medalist Susanthika also affected by cricket restructuring cuts

Olympic medalist Susanthika Jayasinghe has reportedly lost her position as a consultant to Sri Lanka women’s cricket.

Her employment is said to have been terminated following a decision taken last week by the restructuring committee chaired by Iran Wickramaratne, which was appointed by the Minister of Sports. The committee decided to discontinue the services of a large number of individuals who had allegedly been receiving salaries from Sri Lanka Cricket without a clear operational necessity.

According to sources familiar with the committee’s work, the move is expected to result in substantial cost savings for the cricket administration.

Those affected reportedly include individuals employed as consultants and coordinators.

In addition, there are said to be a number of people who had been appointed through district and provincial associations and were receiving monthly allowances equivalent to salaries.

It is also reported that many of these individuals had been provided with insurance coverage.

However, the loss of employment suffered by Susanthika has been viewed by many as particularly unfortunate.

This is because the monthly subsistence allowance previously paid to her by the Ministry of Sports had been discontinued some time ago, after which former Sri Lanka Cricket President Shammi Silva reportedly arranged a position for her within the cricket administration.

Many within the sporting community believe that the State has a duty and responsibility to provide a pension or allowance to Sri Lanka’s only living Olympic medallist. In that context, Shammi Silva’s decision to provide her with employment has been widely regarded as commendable.

In many other countries, Olympic medallists receive a state pension or allowance for life.

Nevertheless, it is regrettable that Susanthika has also become a casualty of the employment cuts introduced by Iran Wickramaratne’s restructuring committee.

Susanthika, who relocated to Australia with her children a few months ago, recently returned to Sri Lanka.

According to reports, she was unable to cope with the high cost of living there.
