Renovated Institute of Neurology at NHSL to open on June 1

Colombo, May 31 (Daily Mirror) – The newly renovated Institute of Neurology at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL) will be officially opened to the public on Monday, June 1, following a comprehensive upgrade carried out at a cost of Rs. 99 million.
The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at 10:00 a.m. at the institute premises under the patronage of Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni is also expected to attend the event.
According to the Ministry of Health, the upgraded facility is expected to enhance the capacity, efficiency, and quality of neurological care in Sri Lanka. The renovation project includes significant improvements to infrastructure and treatment facilities, aimed at strengthening specialized services for patients suffering from disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord, nervous system, and muscles.
As part of the ceremony, a portrait of the founder of the Institute of Neurology, Deshamanya Vidya Jyothi Dr. J.B. Peiris, will be unveiled in recognition of his contribution to the field of neurology in Sri Lanka.
The event will also mark the commissioning of the newly refurbished Neurology Unit Ward Complex, comprising Wards 62 and 63. The facility includes separate male and female wards, each with a capacity of 22 beds.
The Ministry said Rs. 52 million was allocated for the modernization of the ward complex, while Rs. 22 million was spent on renovating the Physiotherapy Unit. A further Rs. 25 million was invested in upgrading the Speech and Occupational Therapy units and the auditorium on the third floor.
