Vietnamese president To Lam arrived in Sri Lanka

– President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam and General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, To Lam, is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka tonight (07) on a state visit, marking a significant milestone in the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The visit is being undertaken at the invitation of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, extended during his state visit to Viet Nam in 2025. It comes at a time when Sri Lanka is continuing its efforts towards economic stability under the current administration, and is the first visit by a Vietnamese President to Sri Lanka in 15 years. Recognized as one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia and a major global manufacturing hub, Viet Nam’s engagement is expected to further strengthen bilateral cooperation. The visit is also anticipated to support Sri Lanka’s industrialization drive, expand foreign market access, and enhance investment opportunities between the two countries.
Key areas of cooperation expected to be strengthened include manufacturing, exports, agriculture modernization, tourism, digital economy, and information technology. Officials say the exchange of expertise is likely to support Sri Lanka’s small and medium-scale enterprises and create new employment opportunities, particularly for youth entering global job markets.The official welcome ceremony will be held tomorrow (08) at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of President Dissanayake, followed by bilateral talks between the two leaders and official delegations. Several Memoranda of Understanding are expected to be signed to expand cooperation across multiple sectors, followed by a joint media briefing.
During the visit, President To Lam will also pay floral tribute at the statue of Ho Chi Minh at the Colombo Public Library and visit the Vietnam–Ho Chi Minh Space showcasing historical photographs. He is also scheduled to address the Parliament of Sri Lanka.In addition, discussions will be held with Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, alongside other political leaders, focusing on strengthening parliamentary and diplomatic ties.
The Vietnamese President will also attend a photographic exhibition at the Hilton Colombo Hotel highlighting bilateral relations, cultural links, and economic cooperation, as well as an exhibition showcasing Vietnamese products, handicrafts, and industrial innovations.He is expected to deliver the keynote address at the Sri Lanka–Vietnam Trade, Investment and Tourism Forum, where the launch of direct flights between Colombo and Ho Chi Minh City/Hanoi by Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air will also be announced.
Following the completion of his engagements, President To Lam and his delegation will conclude the state visit and depart Sri Lanka tomorrow night (08).
