State intervention sought to tackle drugs, social decline through religious revival

– The Buddhasasana Sabha has called for stronger state intervention to address the growing social issues including drug abuse, declining religious discipline and challenges faced by the Buddhist community.
The matter was discussed during a meeting of the Sabha held today (May 12) at the Ministry of Buddhasasana with the participation of the Venerable Maha Sangha representing all Buddhist sects.
Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Hiniduma Sunil Senevi reviewed the Sabha’s past activities and future plans during the meeting.Special attention was focused on preparing action plans through dedicated committees to address issues related to monk education, national reconciliation, religious discipline and the spread of narcotics.
The meeting also discussed plans to organise the upcoming national Vesak festival on a grand scale and reviewed the progress of the ‘Adishthanaye Sanhinda’ programme aimed at rebuilding temples damaged by disasters.
In addition, proposals were submitted to introduce properly standardised Atapirikara for the convenience of devotees.
The participants stressed the importance of strengthening religious revival efforts and enhancing the role of the State in safeguarding and promoting Buddhism in the country.
