Chicken, egg prices may rise during festive season
Chicken and egg prices could rise during the upcoming festive season due to delays in allowing the import of maize, the Sri Lanka Animal Production Association has warned.Association Chairman Ajith Gunasekara said poultry meat and egg production is rapidly declining as rice is being used instead of maize in animal feed.He also said around 20% of small-scale poultry producers have already exited the industry due to the shortage of maize.
The association has urged authorities to address the maize shortage to prevent further declines in poultry production and a possible increase in consumer prices.
