Sri Lanka rejects claims of US pressure over Iranian ships
– Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath has denied claims that the United States pressured Sri Lanka over the provision of supplies to Iranian vessels stationed in international waters near the island.Herath said Sri Lanka’s strategic location meant that a large number of international vessels regularly use maritime routes close to the country’s waters, and that necessary cooperation and logistical support are provided to vessels when required. He said around 47 vessels are currently stationed outside Sri Lanka’s 12-nautical-mile territorial waters in international waters, largely due to navigation-related challenges arising from the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Of these, around 19 are Iranian vessels that have been operating in the region for an extended period.
Addressing reports of foreign interference, Herath said the United States had neither issued any directives nor exerted pressure on the Sri Lankan Government regarding the vessels. He said that Sri Lanka would not bow to external pressure and would continue to safeguard its sovereignty, independence and national identity in its decision-making.The Minister said the Government maintained a neutral foreign policy while addressing humanitarian requirements responsibly and adhering to international maritime law.
He also clarified that the Government had not supplied goods or provisions to vessels subject to international sanctions. If private entities independently provide goods or services to such vessels, they are responsible for understanding the applicable legal requirements and exercising due diligence, he said.
“If the United States has imposed sanctions, as a government, we have not transported goods or provided supplies to those sanctioned vessels. If certain private sector individuals are providing goods and services to various such vessels, it is their responsibility to understand the prevailing situation and act responsibly. As a government, we operate in accordance with international maritime law.”
