Complaints received by the National Institute of Mental Health have reportedly increased due to a rise in mental health problems among women in newly married couples. It has been revealed that, as husbands migrate overseas due to the economic crisis, their wives are left living alone at home and are experiencing psychological distress.Disagreements with relatives while living alone have also contributed to this situation.Doctors at the institute say that many women have been calling to discuss the problems they face in their married lives.
Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Pushpa Ranasinghe has told the media that these women face various difficulties because they are unable to adjust to their new lives after marriage.A total of 28,961 reports concerning mental health problems have been received by the National Institute of Mental Health so far this year.
