Passenger arrested with Rs. 800,000 worth of smuggled whiskey –
A Sri Lankan air passenger was arrested in the early hours of today (13) at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for attempting to illegally bring a large stock of foreign-made whiskey into the country.The suspect, a 28-year-old businessman from Minuwangoda, had arrived from Dubai on Emirates Airlines flight EK-648 at around 12.30 a.m. He was arrested by officers of the Airport Police Narcotics Bureau while exiting the airport.
Police said 69 bottles of whiskey, valued at approximately Rs. 800,000, were found concealed inside his luggage during inspection.
The suspect has since been released on police bail and is due to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court on December 15.
