- Uncapped Pasindu and Isitha in Test squad
The ousted selection committee led by Pramodya Wickramasinghe discarded former white-ball captain and batter Charith Asalanka from the 16-man T20 squad, as they named the respective Sri Lanka squads, which flew out for a multi-format tour of the West Indies yesterday (26).
The already-removed selection panel while omitting Asalanka, 28, a veteran of 76 T20Is, handed the reins of the two white-ball squads instead, to seasoned top-order batter Kusal Mendis, as reported by the local media beforehand.
Asalanka however finds himself being retained in the 16-man One-Day International squad, and it is left to be seen whether the former skipper will be recalled to the sport’s shortest format beyond the impending tour, by the new selection committee now helmed by Kapila Wijegunawardene.
Apart from Asalanka, former skipper Dasun Shanaka has also been relieved of the captaincy, following Sri Lanka’s abject performance in the concluded ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which they co-hosted with eventual winner India in Feb-March.
Shanaka however has managed to retain his spot in the T20I squad, while three notable faces in the line-up are strapping left-arm pacer Binura Fernando, pacer Nuwan Thushara and highly-rated batter Lasith Croospulle, 27, respectively.
Fernando, 30, did not feature in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and last played in the Tri-Series in Zimbabwe in September 2025.
Seamer Thushara who famously took the previous SLC Ex-Co to Court over his employer’s refusal to grant a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to play in the IPL for failing a mandatory fitness test before withdrawing it altogether, also is included.
Ex-Maris Stella opening batter Croospulle’s solitary appearance in the format was against Afghanistan at Hangzhou three years ago.
The T20I squad though does not include the injured left-arm quick Matheesha Pathirana, and in his absence the pace department will revolve around Dushmantha Chameera, Eshan Malinga, Dilshan Madushanka and Milan Rathnayake.
Leg-spinner and all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga in the meantime, is set to return to both white-ball formats, after his injury during the T20 World Cup had sidelined him since early February.
The 16-man ODI squad does not feature any bolters as such, and there is a familiar look to it, with the exception of batter Kamindu Mendis being made the vice-captain across all three formats.
Meanwhile, Dhananjaya de Silva will lead the 17-man red-ball squad, which contains two uncapped players in former Royal star batter Pasindu Sooriyabandara, 27, and ex-Thurstan star all-rounder Isitha Wijesundera, 29, respectively.
The said duo has earned their places in the squad by excelling in domestic first-class tournaments, but it remains to be seen whether they will be able to make their debuts in the format.
The Test squad also sees the return of right-arm off-spinner Ramesh Mendis having represented his country against Australia in Galle in February last year.
The test team has been out of action since June, 2025 with their previous outing being against Bangladesh at home, while the tour will begin with three ODIs from 3-8 June, followed by three T20Is on 11, 13 and 14 June, with both series played at Sabina Park.
The two Tests will be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound from 25-29 June and from 3-7 July, respectively.
New section chair Wijegunawardene has already gone on record insisting that the respective squads for the looming series in the Caribbean were not picked by his panel, which was only set up last Thursday (21) by the Sports Minister.
The new selection committee also includes Amal Silva, Brendon Kuruppu, Waruna Waragoda and Vanessa de Silva.
