The Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry has announced that meat shops, slaughterhouses, race bookies, casinos and clubs will be closed on May 30, May 31 and June 1.

According to an official statement, Vesak Week has been declared from May 27 to June 2.

The ministry further said that the slaughter of animals for meat, the sale of meat at butcher shops and supermarkets, and the operation of race bookies, casinos and clubs will be strictly prohibited islandwide on May 30, May 31 and June 1.

Authorities said the measures have been introduced to facilitate religious observances and maintain the sanctity of the Vesak period across the country.
