Japan grants US$1.33 million to support inland fishermen

The Government of Japan has provided a grant of US$1.33 million to Sri Lanka.he funding is intended to support inland fishermen in the Eastern Province whose livelihoods were affected by Cyclone Ditwah.The relevant agreement was signed on 29 May at the Embassy of Japan in Colombo in the presence of Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar.Technical assistance for the project will be provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
The agreement was signed by Akio Isomata, Japan’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, and Vimlendra Sharan, the FAO Representative in Sri Lanka.Under the project, 200 fish cages are to be installed in 30 selected reservoirs in the Eastern Province.
