Rare dugong carcass washes ashore in Mannar
– The Department of Wildlife Conservation reported that the carcass of a rare dugong (Dugong dugon) was found washed ashore on the Pesalai beach along the Mannar coast on November 30.The 8-foot-2-inch male marine mammal was first spotted by local fishermen and navy personnel, following which wildlife officials inspected the remains.
According to the department, the animal had sustained injuries on its underside, including two sharp-object wounds.Officials confirmed that the marks were not caused by fishing nets and estimated that the dugong had died about two days prior to being found.
