Another 25-tonne consignment of Indian aid arrives in Katunayake today
An aircraft of the Indian Air Force carrying a disaster relief consignment weighing 25 metric tones, intended for distribution among Sri Lankans affected by the disaster, arrived at the Katunayake International Airport today (14).The aircraft also carried back to India members of a hospital staff who had been serving at a field hospital in the Mahiyanganaya area. The Indian Air Force’s C-17, its largest cargo aircraft, arrived at the Katunayake International Airport from Agra, India, at 3.07 p.m. today (14).
The consignment included 25 metric tones of supplies, comprising 17 types of essential medicines required to maintain health services in the country, along with stocks of dry food itemsn After the disaster relief supplies were unloaded from the aircraft, 85 members of the hospital staff who had operated the field hospital in the Mahiyanganaya area, together with their medical equipment, were boarded onto the same aircraft.
Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr Nalinda Jayatissa was present at the Katunayake International Airport near the aircraft to bid farewell to the Indian hospital staff.
Dr Jayatissa revealed that the Indian doctors and hospital staff had provided medical treatment, including essential surgical procedures, to around 7,000 patients and paid tribute to them in appreciation of their service.The aircraft departed Katunayake International Airport once again for Agra, India, at 5.15 p.m. today (14).
