– Investigations have revealed that Kapila Chandrasena, the former Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lankan Airlines, was found dead early Friday morning at the residence of legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Aravinda de Silva in Kollupitiya.
Police said Chandrasena’s body was discovered at the house on Pedris Place, Kollupitiya, which belongs to his brother-in-law, Aravinda de Silva.
It was reported that the two families are closely connected, as Chandrasena and de Silva are married to sisters, Priyanka Neomali Wijenayake and Anushka de Silva. Preliminary investigations revealed that the death may have been a suicide, although a formal inquiry and post-mortem examination are underway to determine the exact cause.
Chandrasena was at the centre of allegations involving a US$2.3 billion aircraft procurement deal, in which he and his wife were accused of accepting a US$2 million bribe through a shell company in Brunei.
It was reported that Chandrasena’s residence is located at Barnes Place in Colombo, and that he had arrived at Aravinda de Silva’s residence yesterday. The Colombo Chief Magistrate yesterday issued a warrant for his arrest over allegations that the bail conditions imposed by the court had been violated through the submission of unsuitable sureties.
Meanwhile, the Magistrate arrived at the scene to conduct a magisterial inquiry.
Following reports of the death, former Sri Lankan cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga also arrived at the scene.
