Heavy showers over 100 mm likely as heat index rises


– The Meteorology Department has warned that prevailing showery conditions across the island are expected to continue over the next few days due to a low-level atmospheric disturbance near Sri Lanka.

According to the department, heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at several places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts.“Showers or thundershowers are expected at most places of the island after 1.00 p.m., while the Northern and Eastern provinces may also experience showers during the morning,” the department said.Meanwhile, the heat index, the temperature felt by the human body is expected to rise to the “Caution level” in the Sabaragamuwa, Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Eastern provinces, along with the Hambantota and Monaragala districts during daytime hours.

The department also noted that misty conditions could occur in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces during the early morning hours.

The public has been advised to take adequate precautions against lightning and temporary strong winds during thundershowers, while those exposed to high temperatures are urged to remain hydrated and avoid prolonged outdoor activity.
