Schools in six provinces to reopen tomorrow as scheduled: Ministry Secretary
– All schools in the Western, Southern, Northern, Eastern, Sabaragamuwa and North-Central provinces will reopen tomorrow (16) as scheduled, Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Nalaka Kaluwewa announced today.Addressing the media, the Secretary said that a majority of schools in the Central, Uva and North-Western provinces will remain closed tomorrow, based on information received from the respective provincial education authorities.
He said a total of 524 schools in the Uva Province will not reopen due to prevailing transport difficulties. These include three schools in the Mahiyanganaya Education Zone, one in the Bibila Education Zone, 88 in the Passara Education Zone, 112 in the Badulla Education Zone, 70 in the Viyaluwa Education Zone, 110 in the Welimada Education Zone and 140 in the Bandarawela Education Zone.In addition, 111 schools in the Central Province and five schools in the North-Western Province will also remain closed tomorrow, he said.
The Secretary noted that decisions on school operations were taken by zonal and provincial authorities, taking into account transport and accessibility issues in the affected areas.
