Flood waste cleanup halfway complete, CEA says
– The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has announced major progress in clearing waste generated by recent floods, signaling a positive step in post-disaster recovery efforts.CEA Chairman Professor Tilak Hewawasam stated that approximately 50% of the waste from areas affected by the overflowing Kelani River has already been removed. Efforts have also been successfully carried out in areas flooded by the Mahaweli River, including Kandy, Kundasale, and Poojapitiya.
Professor Hewawasam highlighted the importance of properly classifying hazardous waste, such as electronic and clinical waste, and said local government institutions have been instructed to follow these guidelines.The CEA also revealed that over 30,000 metric tons of garbage had accumulated in several parts of Colombo due to the Kelani River overflow, emphasizing the scale of the cleanup operation.
Authorities continue to urge public cooperation and adherence to waste disposal regulations to ensure a safer and cleaner environment in the affected areas.
