Government pledges continued support for mothers and children
– Even amid challenging circumstances, the government remains committed to investing in mothers and children, Women and Child Affairs Minister Saroja Savithri Paulraj said today.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony for the distribution of a LKR 5,000 nutrition allowance to pregnant mothers, Minister Paulraj emphasized Sri Lanka’s dedication to strengthening the Early Childhood Development sector in all its dimensions. She highlighted the crucial role of maternal well-being, noting that a mother’s happiness and mental health directly impact the brain development and future personality of her unborn child.
The allowance, introduced in light of the prevailing disaster situation and the upcoming festive season, is provided under a programme of the National Secretariat for Early Childhood Development. Eligible recipients include mothers registered at maternal clinics on or before 30 November 2025, as well as lactating mothers with infants under four months of age. The payment is given on a one-time basis.
The ceremony was held this morning at the Wellawatte Medical Officer of Health Office, with the participation of Ministry Secretary Tharangani Wickramasinghe, directors and officers of the National Secretariat for Early Childhood Development, medical officers and officials from the Ministry of Health, and expectant mothers.
