The local agents and the politicians who closely work with them have earned more than USD 100 million (Rs.36,000 million) by importing substandard fuel in the recent past, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said.
Speaking at a news briefing held at the party headquarters today (6), the MP said a new company has been registered through which fuel is being imported in violation of tender procedures following the appointment of the new Minister of Energy.
MP Jayasekara said a new crisis has already arisen due to the purchase of low-quality crude oil at a higher price at a time when the people are suffering from the lack of US Dollars and fuel.
He also said that plans have been made to import a fuel type named ‘Expo’ with higher carbon contents, and that there is a risk that the catalytic chambers of the refinery will be completely destroyed due to higher carbon in this fuel.
