Pathirage makes Diamond League history
Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage made history by becoming the country’s first Diamond League champion, winning the men’s javelin title with a best throw of 89.04 metres at the Diamond League Final in Brussels on Saturday night.
Pathirage secured the historic victory with his third attempt, sending the javelin 89.04m to take the lead and ultimately claim the title.
Poland’s Dawid Wegner finished second with a personal-best 87.47m, while Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott took third with a season-best 83.99m.
Grenada’s Anderson Peters finished fourth with 83.70m, followed by Kenya’s Julius Yego in fifth with 76.79m.
Belgium’s Timothy Herman and the United States’ Curtis Thompson completed the field.
Pathirage’s final attempt was ruled a foul after his throw went high and short, but it mattered little as the Sri Lankan had already done enough to secure the title.
The victory caps a remarkable 2026 season for Pathirage, who has dominated the Diamond League circuit and owns the world-leading mark of 92.62m, set in Rome on June 4.
