Minister Bimal visits Motor Traffic Office : 8 key decisions
Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake on Thursday (18th) announced a series of administrative and policy decisions following an inspection visit to the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) office in Werahera.
The decisions are aimed at improving service efficiency, reducing congestion and modernizing systems at the department.
Key decisions announced are as follows:
A Queue Management System will be established at the Werahera office without delay.
Trilingual name boards (Sinhala, Tamil and English) will be displayed near the main entrance as a matter of urgency.
To mandatorily implement a new Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) system by 30 April 2026.
Following prior public notice, the provision of services without prior appointments will be suspended from Feb. 28, 2026.
Required facilities and resources for volunteer staff will be provided promptly.
Measures will be taken to expedite the printing of the existing backlog of driving licenses.
Special facilities will be arranged at the Werahera office for individuals who face difficulties obtaining driving licenses under the standard procedures of the National Transport Medical Institute.
Legal steps will be initiated to extend the initial validity period for driving license renewal up to the age of 35, along with an assessment of potential revenue impacts resulting from the change.
