Japan extends $2.5 million emergency grant to Sri Lanka
The Japanese government has decided to provide an emergency grant of $2.5 million to Sri Lanka following the devastation caused by a cyclone that struck the country in late November, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said on Tuesday.The grant will be used to deliver humanitarian assistance through international aid agencies, including food supplies and other essential daily necessities .Landslides and floods triggered by the cyclone have claimed more than 600 lives across the island, causing widespread damage and displacement.
Speaking at a press conference, Motegi said Japan would continue to offer “seamless support to our long-time friend, Sri Lanka,” to help ensure the swift recovery and reconstruction of affected areas.He also noted that a Japanese disaster relief medical team returned from Sri Lanka earlier on Tuesday after providing around 1,250 medical treatments over a two-week period.
