LPBOA calls for bus fare hike following fuel price increase


 The Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) has urged the National Transport Commission (NTC) to implement an interim revision of bus fares following the recent increase in fuel prices.Speaking at a media briefing today (May 31), LPBOA President Gemunu Wijeratne said a fare adjustment should be introduced before the annual bus fare revision scheduled for July.

According to Wijeratne, private bus operators are seeking a 5% increase in fares with effect from June 2, 2026.He further stated that the minimum bus fare should be raised to between Rs. 32 and Rs. 33.

Wijeratne also claimed that private bus operators are currently incurring losses of approximately Rs. 25 per trip as a result of last month’s fuel price hike.Meanwhile, the National Transport Commission (NTC) has announced that there will be no revision of bus fares despite the recent increase in diesel prices.
