A traffic Police Constable on duty, had been hospitalized with grievous injuries after being knocked down by a SUV in Colombo today evening (05).

The vehicle had subsequently come to a stop after crashing into the fountain located at the centre of the Independence Square Roundabout.

The driver, who is said to be a son of a high-ranking police officer, has been arrested.

The injured policeman, who is attached to the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station, is a resident of the Walasmulla area. He has been rushed to the Colombo National Hospital in critical condition, reports say.A special team from the Narahenpita Police has been tasked with investigating the accident, under the directives of the OIC of the Cinnamon Gardens Police.
