GARBAGE PILED IN CITY AREAS TO BE CLEARED IN TEN DAYS

Measures to clear the Colombo garbage piled up due to ‘Ditwah’ within 10 days

Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority, Tilak Hewawasam, said that all garbage accumulated in the suburban areas of Colombo that were affected by flooding due to the impact of Cyclone ‘Ditwah’ is expected to be completely cleared within about 10 days.He pointed out that around 8,000 tonnes of mixed waste have accumulated in the Kolonnawa area alone and that it would be possible to remove this within about two days.In addition, he said that approximately 10,000 to 12,000 tones of waste have accumulated in areas such as Kotikawatta and Mulleriyawa.

“At present, the Western Provincial Authority is carrying out a very successful operation, deploying around 100 lorries per day.I think they will be able to complete everything within about 10 days. However, waste generation is continuing, as cleaning activities are still underway at some houses and business premises.

This is an additional crisis that has arisen in the aftermath of the disaster,” he said.
