Mental health crisis looms in flood-hit areas, health experts warn
– The Health Promotion Bureau has raised concerns over a potential surge in mental health issues among those affected by the recent floods.
Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Vindya Wijayabandara noted that flood-impacted communities often exhibit signs of emotional trauma, including sleep disturbances, prolonged stress and even suicidal thoughts. She further warned that conditions such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are likely to increase as a result of the trauma and uncertainty experienced during the disaster. In response, the Health Ministry is deploying mental health teams to hospitals in affected districts to provide psychosocial support and counselling. Officials noted that the next phase of disaster relief must go beyond food and shelter, underscoring the importance of long-term mental healthcare for survivors. Health experts also stressed the need for safe spaces within relief centres and continued follow-up care to prevent long-term psychological complications.
