14 students confirmed with meningitis in Uva Province

Health officials have confirmed that 10 students showing symptoms of meningitis are currently receiving treatment at the Welimada Base Hospital, while a further 18 students with similar symptoms are being treated at the Diyatalawa Base Hospital.According to hospital sources, a group of schoolchildren from the Welimada, Keppetipola and Udaperuwa areas had been admitted to hospital after developing symptoms associated with meningitis. Doctors confirmed that four students receiving treatment at the Welimada Base Hospital had tested positive for the disease.The remaining students who showed symptoms have undergone medical tests, and authorities are awaiting the reports.
Hospital sources said the 10 students receiving inpatient treatment at Ward No. 1 of the Welimada Base Hospital include five children under the age of 14 and five older students.Meanwhile, doctors at the Diyatalawa Base Hospital stated that 10 out of the 18 students currently receiving treatment there had also been confirmed to have meningitis, while the others are undergoing further medical examinations after displaying symptoms linked to the illness.Health officials have urged the public to seek immediate medical attention and inform the nearest Public Health Officer if they experience symptoms such as fever, headache, dizziness, vomiting, nausea and skin rashes or blisters.Public health authorities have also advised the public to follow health safety measures, including wearing face masks, washing hands regularly with disinfectants, maintaining proper sanitation and avoiding large gatherings.
