Rs. 13.5 billion allocated for national school development in 2026

– Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Harini Amarasuriya said that Rs. 13.5 billion has been allocated in the 2026 Budget for the development of physical resources in national schools and colleges, the highest amount ever allocated for the purpose.
She also said that a further Rs. 5 billion has been earmarked for school renovation projects.The Prime Minister made these remarks while addressing principals of national schools in the Western Province at an Awareness and Capacity Development Program held at the Ministry of Education’s Isurupaya premises on June 2.She said the government is committed to making schools safe and supportive environments that provide children with love, care and security.Dr. Amarasuriya further said that the government has prepared plans to expedite ongoing infrastructure and sanitation development projects in schools to ensure students benefit from them as soon as possible.She added that new school development projects are expected to commence from 2027 as part of the government’s broader efforts to improve educational facilities across the country.
Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Nalaka Kaluwewa and several ministry officials also attended the programme.
