Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage has temporarily suspended the registration of Sri Lanka Badminton (SLB) and the Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL), appointing transformation committees to investigate alleged irregularities within the 02 bodies.Extraordinary Gazette notifications have been issued by the Sports Minister in this regard, under powers vested in him under sections 32 and 33 of the Sports Law, No. 25 of 1973.The management of SLB and CFSL has been assigned to their respective transformation committees until new office-bearers are elected.

The Gazette orders stipulate that elections must be held within 90 days of the registration of each new constitution.Previously, an Extraordinary Gazette notification also temporarily suspended the registration of the Sri Lanka Automobile Sports Association.

Kusum Kumara. The other members are former national badminton player Niluka Karunaratne, Milinda Sooriyaarachchi, Swadesh Randika de Silva and Saman Srilal.Notably, the appointment follows action by the Sri Lanka Badminton Executive Committee to suspend the former president after presenting a series of allegations concerning purported irregularities and misconduct during his tenure. The former president, who was elected for a two-year term beginning in May 2025, had been served with a charge sheet by the executive committee and instructed to submit a detailed written explanation within one week of the date of issue of the charge sheet.

The five-member Sri Lanka Cycling Federation Transformation Committee will be chaired by Anura Mahaarachchi. The other members are retired Rear Admiral Chandana Rathnayake, R. Chandrasekara, Upali Rathnayake and Kusalani Wickramarathna. The committee is responsible for investigating alleged fraud, corruption and other irregularities within the federation, drafting a new constitution, registering eligible members and conducting the meetings required to elect new office-bearers.The Gazette also revokes, with immediate effect, Extraordinary Gazette Notification bearing No. 2450/42, published on Aug. 21, 2025, before announcing the suspension of the federation’s registration and the appointment of the new transformation committee.

The committee has been authorised to administer cycling until new office-bearers are elected at an Annual General Meeting held under the new constitution.
