Possible opening of Moragahakanda Reservoir spill gates
– Authorities have warned of the potential opening of the spill gates at the Moragahakanda Reservoir due to rising water levels, following heavy rainfall and inflows from surrounding catchment areas.Engineer in Charge of the Moragahakanda Project, P. S. Bandara, said that as of 2 p.m today (18), the reservoir water level stood at 184.80 meters, reaching 98.92% of total capacity. He noted that additional water may enter the reservoir if rainy conditions persist, particularly from the Bowathenna Reservoir overflow.
“If the water entering the Moragahakanda Reservoir increases further, it may become necessary to open the spill gates,” Engineer Bandara said. Water released from the reservoir flows into the Amban River, a tributary of the Mahaweli River, which could cause water levels in both rivers to rise.Engineer Bandara urged authorities and the public to remain vigilant. Updates on the reservoir status, water levels, spill gate operations, and water discharge into the Amban River will be shared via the ‘DDMC-Polonnaruwa’ WhatsApp group. Residents living along the Amban and Mahaweli rivers are advised to monitor water levels closely and take precautions.
He also assured that proper awareness measures would be provided prior to the opening of the spill gates to minimize potential risks.
